5.OPEN: October-December/2024: Postdoctoral Research Associate (SilvaLab)

Project: EMS4D: Multi-Scale Fuel Mapping and Decision Support System for Next Generation Fire Management

We seek a postdoctoral research associate to address key questions in forest fuel mapping and fire management through the integration of active LiDAR remote sensing, field data, and artificial intelligence. The ideal candidate will have experience in using LiDAR and multi-spectral data to estimate surface and canopy fuel loads in Western US. Individuals with strong quantitative skills or programming experience (e.g., R, Python) and a desire to expand their knowledge of remote sensing and machine learning techniques is preferred. Key responsibilities include leading manuscripts and engaging in workshops with land managers. Experience in publishing research or acquiring funding is desirable. The associate will be located at the School of Forests, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences (SFFGS) at the University of Florida, Gainesville, working under the direction of Dr. Carlos Silva on the EMS4D project. This project focuses on developing a dynamic, multi-scale ecosystem monitoring system for mapping vegetation fuel load dynamics in the Western U.S. The research will support fire and fuel management by creating up-to-date fuel load maps and a decision-support tool for land managers. The position is funded for one year with a salary of $60,000. Based on performance and additional funding, the position may be extended, and the base salary increased. The preferred start date is Jan 10, 2025.

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter and CV by December 1, 2024, to Dr. Silva at c.silva@ufl.edu

3.CLOSED: November/2021: Postdoctoral Research Associate (83164)

Project: Forest-Level Examination of Silviculture Effects on Ecosystem Services (ForESEES) through integration of Remote Sensing with Field Experiments

We seek a postdoctoral research associate to address fundamental questions related to pine forest management and ecology through integration of field plot and remotely sensed data. The preferred candidate will have interest in and experience using LiDAR and hyper-/multi-spectral data to estimate tree density, heights, and species composition. Individuals with strong quantitative abilities or programming experience (R, C++) and a desire to learn remote sensing techniques will also be considered. Expectations include leading manuscripts and assisting in proposal development and so experience in publishing research or acquiring funding are also desired. The associate will be located in the School of Forests, Fisheries and Geomatics Sciences (SFFGS) at the University of Florida, Gainesville. They will work collaboratively with Drs. Carlos Silva, Eben Broadbent, and Jason Vogel on a larger project to examine the relative production of ecosystem services (e.g., carbon, timber, water, and biodiversity) among forest management regimes. The position is funded for one-year at $50,000; however, if additional funding is acquired, and based on candidate performance, the timeline and/or base salary could be increased. The preferred start date is January 1st, 2022.
